Awasi Atacama Excursions

Upon arrival at the lodge, your private guide will take your preferences and weather conditions into account to design the ideal itinerary together. Each day you will be able to choose either one Full Day or two Half Day excursions to explore Atacama's natural beauty. Our lodge sits at 2,500 metres above sea level and some attractions are at more than twice this altitude, so proper acclimatization is necessary during the first 2 days.

Enjoy the calm of the oasis as the sun rises over the Andes Mountains and the iconic Licancabur Volcano. The vibrant colors of dawn and the peaceful atmosphere create a perfect setting to share breakfast in the company of your private guide and the surrounding nature.

This excursion is ideal for photography enthusiasts and can be combined with continuation toward the Atacama Salt Flat or the Salt Mountain Range.

Bicycles can also be brought along, allowing for a scenic ride back to the hotel.

Rainbow Valley reveals a striking palette of colour across the landscapes of the Domeyko Range,
shaped by layers of mineral-rich rock.

The experience combines exploration with moments of cultural significance, including the nearby Yerbas Buenas site, home to one of the region’s most important concentrations of petroglyphs attributed to the Lickan Antay culture. Further along, the Matancilla Valley offers a glimpse into the desert’s geological history through its vividly layered formations.

Chaxa Lagoon

Chaxa Lagoon is notable for its expansive views of the Atacama Basin, known for its crystalline salt flat formations and a diverse variety of birdlife, including three species of flamingos in summer.

Notes: It is recommended to visit during the first days of your stay for proper acclimatization. The best times for visiting are before noon or near sunset, when the light beautifully illuminates the landscape.

Salado River

Driving north of San Pedro de Atacama, the route passes several highlights of the region, including Piedra de la Coca, while offering open views of the Andean peaks to the east.

The landscape gradually opens into a secluded section of the Río Salado canyon, where shallow waters invite a walk along the riverbed.

The hike is gentle and accessible, with minimal technical difficulty — ideal for those looking to explore the desert at a slower pace and its only 45 minutes away from the lodge.

Note: This activity is best undertaken during the warmer months (October to March), as water temperatures can be very cold in winter. Bringing water shoes is also advised for greater comfort.

Stargazing is a must when visiting San Pedro de Atacama. The stargazing tour offers a detailed look at the night sky, under some of the most favorable conditions on earth, both with our bare eyes and through a powerful telescope. You will be amazed by the beauty of space while having the opportunity to learn about subjects such as constellations, the celestial sphere, archeoastronomy, cosmology, stellar evolution and space exploration.

Notes: The availability of this tour is subject to weather conditions. These conditions become more unpredictable during the month of February because of the rainy season.

When the moon takes over the night sky and prevent us from observing most other celestial bodies we can still enjoy and learn when looking up to the sky. But we take the opportunity to observe brighter objects and we focus on the moon and its enchantment.

This is not a private activity and may be carried out in small groups of other Awasi guests.

Horseback Riding

Explore the world's driest desert on horseback. This excursion takes guests through some of Atacama's iconic landscapes: Mars Valley, the formations of the Salt Range, or the historic ayllus.

The route is selected according to each rider’s experience and preferences, and the starting point is only 5 minutes away from Awasi. Options are available for both beginners and experienced riders

Please note: we recommended wearing comfortable pants and closed shoes for a more enjoyable ride.

"Ayllus" (“families” in Quechua, the language of the Incas) are the traditional forms of community in the Andes, and were at the heart of the Inca Empire´s economic prosperity. Depending on each Ayllu, labor was divided by region, with agriculture centralized in the most productive areas. Today, San Pedro de Atacama is made up of 15 Ayllus, located in the areas surrounding the town. Here, it is possible to visit the cultivated pastures and to observe the thousand-year old route of irrigation canals which are representative of the agrarian way of life of the ethnic Lickan Antay, which has remained relatively intact for millennia.

Notes: This activity can be enjoyed by car, or by walking, horseback riding or biking directly from the lodge. Since it is located at a similar altitude to our lodge, this is a great option to get acclimatized during the first two days of your stay.

Catarpe

In the north side of the town, following the course of the San Pedro river, you come to the Catarpe sector. Here officials of the Tawantinsuyu (Inca kingdom) were assigned to govern the Lickan Antay, collecting taxes and recruiting people to form armies for the Inca. The remains of the Kallanka (Inca center) can still be seen, surrounded by the majestic Cordillera de la Sal and the salty waters of the river. This destination can be combined with other excursions, like La Garganta del Diablo.

The Salar de Atacama is the third largest salt flat on the planet. At its heart there are lagoons of high salinity that possess unique and beautiful birdlife, in addition to plants that are extremely salt-tolerant. At Cejar lagoon it is possible to bathe and enjoy an experience similar to that of the Dead Sea. Los Ojos del Salar and the Laguna Tebenquiche, both of great scenic beauty, can also be visited during this excursion.

Within the Salt Range lies a landscape shaped by time, where dunes meet salt-covered ridges and wind-carved formations.
During the last thousands of years, erosion caused by unusual rainfall in this hyper-arid region has formed a strange karst landscape. Due to the barren soils, dry climate, and intense sunlight, the mountains are mostly absolute desert. Explore the sandy hills to witness the vastness of the region while the Andes mountains and numerous volcanoes line the horizon.

Note: Since it is located at a similar altitude to our lodge, this is a great option to get acclimatized during the first two days of your stay.

Garganta del Diablo

The Cordillera de la Sal is composed of endless stream beds that mirror the landscape of the planet Mars. They are normally dry but ̈beware of their treacherous waters ̈ upon the arrival of the rains. One of them stands out for the enormity of its walls of clay and gypsum, from which you can expect fantastic views behind every nook and cranny of the route, finishing in a great dry waterfall: the Devil’s Ravine or Throat of the Devil.

Guatin Cactus Hike

Between the dryness of the salt flats and the impressive Puna are the intermediate ravines. That of the Vilama river is considered among the most beautiful and interesting, where the Cardón or Pasakana cactus grow. There are two possible routes to be taken from Guatin: you can ascend towards the Puritama hot springs or descend to the archaeological site of Gatchi. Both routes present a similar duration and level of difficulty.

San Pedro de Atacama is known as the archaeological capital of Chile. The town has been permanently inhabited for at least 2,500 years. On this excursion you will visit the major archaeological sites of the settlement: the Pukará de Quitor; a pre-Columbian fort built with adobe and white volcanic rock, the village of Tulor; which has an enigmatic history and is a reflection of how architectural design is inextricably linked to the geography of the area through the use of locally sourced materials, as well as the town square and the church which was built during the Spanish colonial period and is the second oldest church in Chile.

Notes: This activity can be enjoyed by car, or walking / biking directly from the lodge. Since it is located the same altitude as our lodge, this is a great option to get acclimatized during the first two days of your stay.

Near the border with Argentina, the Aguas Calientes salt flats unfold across a vast high-altitude landscape, surrounded by volcanoes and marked by striking reddish waters.

The Salar de Aguas Calientes offers expansive views and a sense of scale unique to this remote
part of the Altiplano, where the terrain shifts between salt, rock, and sky.

Alto Loa Villages

At the beginning of the Altiplano there are some villages that still keep to the thousand-year old traditions of the Lickan Antay culture, such as Caspana and Chiu-Chiu. Caspana is located at almost 4,000 meters altitude and preserves one of the oldest cultivation systems in the region, within a privileged landscape that combines desert, oasis and the altiplano. Chiu-Chiu was regarded as the capital of Atacama la Baja, or Lower Atacama, counterpart to the power centered in San Pedro, and boasts the oldest church in Chile, the San Francisco de Chiu-Chiu Church.

Notes: As this excursion implies ascending to a significant altitude, it is only recommended after 2 days of acclimatization.

Lejía Lagoon

Located in the heart of the Andean Altiplano, Lejía Lagoon offers one of the most impressive landscapes in the region. Surrounded by vast volcanic terrain and framed by the imposing Láscar Volcano, its intensely blue waters contrast with the high-altitude desert and the Andean peaks.

The area is home to various high-Andean wildlife species, and depending on the season and environmental conditions, it is possible to spot flamingos, vicuñas, and native Altiplano birds. Wildlife sightings, however, remain subject to natural variability and cannot be guaranteed.

The El Tatio (from the kunza "Tata-io-Maiko", which means "the grandfather who cries") geysers are one of the most popular attractions in the country. It is the largest geothermal field in the southern hemisphere, complete with small fumaroles and bubbling springs and beautiful fountains of water. However, what truly sets it apart is a different statistic: at around 4.300 meters above sea level (14.170 feet) the highest one in the world. This attraction can be enjoyed at any time of the day, but when the air temperature is low, the fumaroles of steam are more noticeable. This means that during the hotter months (November to March) dawn is a popular time to visit, however during the rest of the year temperatures are lower and this phenomena can be enjoyed for longer hours.

This excursion includes a stop in the village of Toconao and a visit to Piedras Rojas, Salar de Aguas Calientes III and Salar del Talar. It also features a visit to one of the region's most iconic attractions: the Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons.

Situated at an altitude of 4,100 meters, these lagoons are renowned for their scenic beauty. Miscanti, the larger of the two, offers a panorama of Andean volcanoes and is home to vicuñas and horned taguas. Miñiques, the smaller lagoon, sits beneath the Miñiques volcano and is habitat to a rich variety of species.

Notes: This excursion covers a total of 375km by car and is subject to weather conditions and conservation regulations imposed by the local communities. As the experience implies ascending to an altitude above 4,000 meters, it is only recommended after at least 2 days of acclimatization.

Láscar Volcano

The journey to this emblematic volcano of the North of Chile is challenging. It ascends by the route to the village of Talabre and it continues towards the abandoned Huatiquina pass, passing close to the beautiful Laguna Lejía. The path to the summit is long and of moderate technical difficulty, and is remarkable by its proximity to the crater of the volcano, from which it is possible to observe multiple Láscar smoking sulphur vents.

Notes:
- This is a high-altitude excursion subject to weather and safety conditions.
- A minimum acclimatizacion of 5 days of is required prior to ascent. This makes it suitable for guests on their 6th day in Atacama. For an ideal experience, we recommend a 7-day/6-night stay in Atacama.
– To ensure proper acclimatization, we recommend doing daily hikes at varying altitudes and including an ascent to Cerro Toco.
– Participants must have appropriate cold-weather gear suitable for extreme temperature conditions.
